Red light cameras installed
Four Menlo Park intersections have been targeted
A red light photo-enforcement program went into effect Tuesday to cover four of Menlo Park's busiest intersections. The police department has worked over the past year with the California Department of Transportation to obtain permits to install red-light cameras at four intersections in the city.
Recent data show that vehicles running red lights contributed to 20 percent of major-injury collisions and 17 percent of fatal collisions in the city, according to police.
The first intersection to receive red light cameras was Willow Road and Highway 84, or Bayfront Expressway, located near the Dumbarton Bridge. It is one of the busiest intersections in the city, with more that 46,900 vehicles traveling through it in any given 24-hour period.
Violators caught running lights by the camera system have a 30-day reprieve during which they will receive a warning letter in the mail informing them that they were caught by the cameras. Citations will begin to be issued at 12:01 a.m. June 5, the police department reported.
