Barbecue fire and water damage 18 apartments
More than 30 firefighters respond
Eighteen apartments damaged Saturday afternoon after a blaze jumped from a barbecue grill to a tree and finally to an apartment building.About 35 firefighters from Sunnyvale's Department of Public Safety, and Mountain View, Santa Clara and Santa Clara County departments helped put out the fire first reported at 1:52 p.m. on the 600 block of Morse Avenue, said John Pilger, a spokesman for the city.
No one was injured in the fire that set a portion of the two-story building's attic line ablaze, Pilger said. Nine of the apartments also sustained water damage while the other nine experienced fire damage.
The second alarm was pulled at 2:10 p.m., and the third alarm was called at 2:22 p.m. The fire was out around 3:30 p.m. when crews began to disperse, Pilger said.
The American Red Cross was called in to assist residents displaced by the fire.
