Stabbing suspect ruled competent for his trial

A man facing murder charges for the fatal stabbing of a man in San Bruno was ruled Wednesday to be mentally competent to stand trial.

Brandon Louis Gill, 28, of King City, is accused of fatally stabbing 64-year-old Romeo Lansang of South San Francisco on March 25, 2004. He had never met his victim before the attack on Easton Avenue, prosecutors said.

Gill tried to carjack a woman in a nearby vehicle after he stabbed Lansang, officials say. For the next two weeks, he managed to successfully elude police before investigators caught up with him in Monterey County.

Gill was deemed incompetent to stand trial in 2005, but doctors at Napa State Hospital recently returned him to San Mateo County after determining that he had been restored to competency.

Gill, who pleaded not guilty Wednesday by reason of insanity, is being charged with homicide and attempted carjacking.

He is being held in custody without bail and is scheduled to return to San Mateo County Superior Court on May 29 for a hearing to set a date for his jury trial.
